I have to start by saying that the Dizzles are blessed with the best friends anyone could imagine. Not once, not twice, but four times, this group of Boston-living globe trekkers has ventured all the way to the middle of nowhere New Jersey to hang out. The last trip was to celebrate New Years and, of course, the most important holiday ever created by a fictional character in a wildly popular 1990s television sitcom- FESTIVUS.
Everyone arrived New Year’s eve and we quickly got down to business with the celebrating. The ladies chose to dress up and even the dog sported a holiday bandana. We played games, had a roaring fire, and watched the ball drop. Pretty standard New Year’s stuff. We also got Chinese take out from the fabulous House of Wong in Bridgewater. After years of Chinese take out disappointment in Boston, we’ve finally found a go-to place for guaranteed deliciousness.
Friday, January 1st marked our celebration of Festivus! We started early with the Airing of Grievances, where everyone writes down what has really peeved them over the last year. We wound up with a piece of paper about 6 feet by 4 feet filled with things ranging from bad drivers to bad clothes to bad manners. And a few less savory items.

As the day wore on, we recreated my grandmother’s annual New Year’s day feast with meatballs, sausage, pasta, sauce, and Grandma Gloria’s famous meat roll. Christmas cookies and random treats finished the meal.
And then we got to the Feats of Strength, this time in the form of board games and fireworks. The latter scared the bejesus out of the dog, but our neighbors applauded our display. We played games for Festivus Bucks, which are legal tender for all debts public and private held by the Human Fund- Money for People.

Here’s to the 5th Annual Festivus and to continuing the tradition in 2010, because I’ve got a lot of problems with you people, and you’re going to hear about them!

I’d like to include a few other Festivus happenings that Mrs. Dizzle must have conveniently forgotten or maybe just blocked out of her memory. The first was the arm raise challenge!! How could you forget the 5 numbsculls (myself included) who raised one arm and refused to let it down for 37 minutes?? We eventually had to declare a draw as each of us refused to lose. Now THAT’S a feat of strength and stubborness.
I’d also like to highlight the moment when I won the first round of the Festivus dice game. I had my choice of 3 pretty sad $1 rack DVDs or a brand new bear filled with honey! Of course I took the honey!! Greg was HEATED!
[...] Festivus Preparation: With the much-needed help of my friend Kelly, I spent the better part of an entire weekend making casseroles and other assorted freeze-able foods to stock up for Festivus. For those of you unfamiliar with the holiday, for five years we’ve been holding an annual Festivus Holiday party, which comes from a beloved episode of Seinfeld. In the episode, George’s father explains a holiday that he’s made up to take the place of the over-commercialized Christmas: A Festivus for the rest of us! Here’s my post from last year’s Festivus in New Jersey. [...]
